Gift Exchange

Dear parents of students in Grade 3C,

To celebrate the completion of a successful school year, we have decided to conduct a gift exchange in our classrooms on Monday, December 17th. It is hoped that all children will participate in this social activity.

The children will engage in a ‘Lucky Dip’ to tell them if they have to arrange a ‘girl’ or ‘boy’ present. Each child is then to purchase a small gift up to the value of $3.00. The gift needs to be wrapped and the ‘Boy’ or ‘Girl’ card they have been provided with must be attached. Gifts can be brought to school and placed under the tree any time after December 10th. To ensure no one misses out, all gifts should be in the classroom no later than Friday, December 14th.

Some gift suggestions include:

§  Wrapped sweets/chocolates

§  Stationary items

§  Small toys

§  Ornaments

§  Jewellery

§  Stickers

§  Balls

If there are any concerns, please contact me as soon as possible.

Week 8 Update/ Homework

Hello All,

Literacy

This week in literacy we are looking at Compound words (two words that are joined together to make a new word) for example chop + stick = chopstick. As we are learning these, all spelling words this week are compound words. See below.

Students in 3C are working at finding errors in pieces of work, which is making students take a bit of care when reading through their own work.

All Accelerated Readers and Library books need to be returned by Friday 30th November

Numeracy

This week in Mathematics we are learning to read timetables. This means we are looking at our class timetable, train timetables and even the television guide. Being able to read how long a program goes for, or when a particular show on is a great skill that we are learning.

Investigations

Students are beginning to build models, write scripts and make posters about the building or place in Melbourne that they have chosen to research. Students are encouraged to bring in cardboard boxes that they might use to create their model.

Homework: Here is a number of buildings that are in Melbourne City, please find out the name of the building. You may use the internet, look in a book, asking a parent or relative to help you find out the name of the building. Students who return this with labelled pictures by Monday 3rd of December will receive a prize.

Swimming carnival

Swimming carnival is on the 12th of December, students who have paid the levy need to return their form with their parent’s signature and emergency phone number. Non-Levy payers need to pay $10 with their parent’s signature and emergency contact. So far more than half the class has returned this notice so it is looking to be a fantastic day. Please be sure to return this by the 30th of November.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about this. Students who do not attend have an alternate program held at school.

Christmas Carols

For our school Christmas Carols, Grade 3’s have been asked to learn the song “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree”. These will be held on Thursday 13th December. More details to follow shortly.

Over 1000 views

I am pleased to announce that this blog has received over 1000 views, thank you for your wonderful support.

Homework Due : 26th November

Hello Everyone,

This week we are beginning to research our chosen area of Melbourne for our investigations. It would be wonderful if students could find information about their topic in books from the library or on the internet and bring this in for us to look at.

Some of the topics students have chosen include:

·        The Old Melbourne Gaol

·        Flinders Street

·        Richmond Football Club

·        Queen Victoria Market

·        Melbourne  Cricket Ground (MCG)

·        Parliament Station

·        Bourke Street Christmas Myer Windows

·        Australia 108

·        The Melbourne Zoo

·        Docklands

·        Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)

·        Queen’s Bridge

·        Southern Cross Station

·        The Melbourne Cup

·        Young and Jackson

·        Kings Way

·        The Yarra River

·        The Royal Botanical Gardens

·        The Princess Theatre

·        The Shrine of Remembrance

·        The Australian Open (Tennis)

If you have at home any books or brochures about these topics please bring them in to class to share.

Mathematics Update:

In Maths we are learning about time. We are learning to read the time using words like ‘quarter past’ ‘half past’ and ‘quarter to’. We are remembering to count in fives to help us tell the time on an analogue clock. Where possible can you read the time to your parents?

What is happening in Literacy?

In literacy we are looking at prefixes and suffixes.

A prefix comes at the beginning of a word- such as un/dis/non/im

A suffix is attached to the end of the word- such as ed/ing/es/ly/ment/tion/er

These change the meaning of words.

Can you make a list of these as homework. (This can be completed on the computer if you choose)

Just a reminder that we have many notices due back these include:

·        Swimming Carnival (Due: 30th Of November)

·        Book Lists (handed out 19/11/12) Due:7th December

·        2013 School Diary- compulsory for Grade 4’s (Due: 7th December)

·        2013 School Levy (Due: 7th December)

·        Attendance for 2013 at Lynbrook Primary School

Have a great week,

Miss Cameron

Recount of our Excursion by one of our students:

Grade 3 IMAX/Museum Excursion

When I arrived at Lynbrook station I saw everyone lined up behind their teachers. Went to my teacher to get my name ticked off and at exactly 8.48 the train arrived. We all got on but it took ages and I mean ages to get to Parliament station but we finally got there. We walked to the IMAX Theatre we watched this movie called Australia. It was a good movie. We learned lots of things we didn’t know. After that we went to the Melbourne Museum. It was really fun there. We learned lots of stuff at the Melbourne Museum like we did at IMAX. My group’s leader was the best because she showed us the cool stuff first. My most favourite thing was the dinosaur walk because I learned how long dinosaurs lived for. I think dinosaurs are the best prehistoric creature. After that we had to stop the fun and go home. We walked to parliament station. We rode the train to Lynbrook station. My parents came and I went home.JJ

Week 3 Homework Due: 26th October

Hello Again,

We are getting back into the swing of the term, It is amazing that 2 and a half weeks have already gone.

This week for Homework, students are asked to label a map of Australia. They should label the states and cities.
Spelling words will be tested on Friday. (Please note that some students have changed groups)

In mathematics we are looking at Parallel  and Perpendicular lines. We also are introducing angles- looking at larger and smaller angles and right angles. If you could see any at home or on the way to school it would be great to take advantage of that learning opportunity.

We are looking forward to our excursion to Melbourne next week, where we will be sure to learn about the great city we live in. We would love a Parent/ Grandparent to come in to our class and talk about Melbourne as they remember it. Please send a note with your children if you are interested.

In class we often use the iPads. It would be wonderful if you have a spare set of headphones at home that  could be brought to class, as this would create less interruptions to other students.

Parent Helpers - Living Books

Dear Parents/Carers of students in Grade 3,

It is hard to believe we are now into Term 4. Where has the year gone?

The children have worked extremely well throughout the year and should be congratulated on their efforts and achievements. Term 4 is shaping up to be an exciting term full of outstanding educational experiences and learning opportunities.

Our Investigations inquiries will continue to focus on the study of Melbourne. The children will be exploring the history of Melbourne, significant people who have contributed to its development, growth and culture and the personal experiences that the children themselves and members of their families have had in Melbourne.

To support this unit, it would be appreciated if all children could bring any photos they have of themselves and their families taken in and around Melbourne. These could include, for example, photos taken at the Royal Melbourne Show, sporting venues, concerts, The Zoo, gardens, restaurants, galleries and museums and shopping precincts. For safekeeping, we will photocopy and return the children’s photos as quickly as possible.

Aware that not everyone has always lived in our wonderful city of Melbourne or its suburbs, we would welcome any family members (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc.) who would be willing to come into our grade and talk about their first experiences of Melbourne. We are sure that many people will have memories and stories to share that will enhance the children’s understanding of Melbourne as a culturally diverse and vibrant city. At this stage we have set aside Week 5 (5th – 9th November) for these ‘Living Stories’ presentations and we would be thrilled to hear from anyone who would be willing to contribute. You can either contact us directly by popping into the classroom before or after school, writing a note in your child’s diary, or via the school’s telephone number - 8787 – 5390

We look forward to working with your wonderful children in Term 4 and thank you for your ongoing support.

Kind regards,

Grade 3 teachers

Term 4

Welcome back to Term 4!

I hope everyone had a wonderful relaxing holiday and is ready for the term ahead. I visited Korea over the break and was very impressed with the culture, foods, and customs and had a wonderful experience. It was fun trying to communicate with someone that does not speak the same language as me. Understanding the little things that change when you visit a country was also interesting, such as standing on the left of a path, looking at cars drive on the other side of the road, and eating with chop sticks.

It is great to be back and I am looking forward to a great term. This term we are learning about our city “Melbourne” which links into our city camp and our excursion to IMAX and the Melbourne Museum. We are looking for a parent helper from each classroom. A note has been handed out about this. (Parent helpers must have a current working with Children’s check.)

Homework will be spelling words and times tables revision. With occasional worksheets handed out. Please encourage students to access Studyladder and Mathletics as often as possible as this will assist their classroom learning.

This week’s spelling words are linked to our topic and would be valuable to learn for the classroom.

In mathematics for week 1 and 2 we will be focusing on measuring volume and capacity. Students have been encouraged to look around the house for items that are labelled with millilitres (mL) and Litres (L).

As always if there are any questions please do not hesitate.

Camp week- Homework Due 12th September

Hello all,

Camp is just days away and we are all looking forward to it!
This week our spelling words will be about camp. A spelling test will take place when we come back from camp (Tuesday 11th or Wednesday the 12th of September) So try to learn these before then.

A list of items that students need to bring to camp has been sent home, if there are any questions feel free to ask. The students have to meet us at Lynbrook Train station at 8.30am and report to myself with their spending money ($10 in a marked envelope).
A reminder that cameras are allowed on camp, though they are the full responsibility of the children. It looks to be a great time and I am really looking forward to it.

For the students that are not attending there will be an alternative program held at school (normal school hours).

Regards

Miss Cameron.

Homework Due Friday 31st of August

This week I have received many amazing pieces of homework, the Olympic torch and stadium showed the effort some of the students are going to.
Keep up the good work!
We are also continuing to design our own Olympics in class, we have some very creative characters in 3C.

In literacy we will be looking at Prefixes (added to the beginning) and suffixes (added to the end) of words that add meaning. For example in the word Helpful the suffix 'ful' means full of,
so helpful = help + ful ( means full of help).

Can you think of any more? You could send them to me via SuperClubsPlus (my user name is RCameron2)

In Maths we will look at Mapping (using words such as North, South, East, West, Left and Right, as well as using grids on maps).

We will continue to look at the four times table in class and will try to squeeze in more times table challenges as often as possible.

It is just over 10 days away from our first school camp, notices have been sent home about what to bring. Please be advised that many students have asthma so deodorant that is spray on is discouraged, roll on would be much better, if needed.

Once again if there are any questions please let me know.

Miss Cameron
(I have learnt how to put photos on, have a look at our shapes that we made in class this term.)

Homework Week 6- Due Friday 24th August

Well done everyone for getting their camp payments in on time :)
It is only a few weeks away and we are getting excited. Please remember to bring your medical forms back (even if you don't take medication we need to know the best way to contact mum and dad/ carer).

This week in class we are looking at Plurals (words that add-s -es or -ies when talking about more than one). For example 'I have three books' or 'I saw three foxes' or 'There were many babies at the party'. Can you think of some more?

We are editing stories we have written in class and getting ready to publish them, so please remember your USB so we can save them.

In Maths this week we are looking at Mass- using grams and kilograms.

A quick reminder also that there is a whole school assembly this Friday.

Let's try to learn our 4 times tables this week.

What's happening in Grade 3

Week 5 Homework - Due 17th August

Hello all,

Hope you are finding the Blog ok. It was nice to hear some great feedback about the blog. Students have presented their homework in many ways, I have seen some great hand-drawn pictures of future mascots, the Olympic Torch in 'Paint', an athlete’s profile in Microsoft Word, and many emails on super clubs.

We are all getting excited about our upcoming camp, just a reminder that camp payment is due on the 17th of August and medical forms are due the 24th of August.

I am glad to see that we have received a few more GOLD medals since I last posted.

Homework Week 4- Due Friday 10th of August

Hello All,

We are having some teething issues with our new blog, though I am confident that these will diminish as we continue to learn. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
It is great to see many of you have accessed the blog to see your spelling words, you can practice these by writing them on a whiteboard, repeating them to your parents or writing them on a piece of paper. Someone in our class even emailed me their spelling words via super clubs plus. The choice is yours. J

In the “Olympic Games Matrix” (below) it is expected that students complete one of these each week.  I encourage students to access super clubs to email me their answers (my user name is RCameron2) or bring their homework in on a USB.
In class we will be revising the 6 times tables. So let's get ready for a times table challenge.
I wonder if we will win anymore GOLD medals at these games?

C’mon Aussies!

Spelling Words - Term 3 Week 3

Here are our spelling words for Week 3. Please remember which group you are allocated to and practice your spelling words ready for Friday. Also learn and practice your 6 times tables ready for our class times table challenge.
Hi 3C,

Welcome to our fantastic new blog!

Here you can see what we are doing in the classroom
as well as get your homework, spelling words and find out news.

This term our homework will include regular reading of Accelerated Reader, times tables practise, spelling words and a special Olympic themed weekly task.
Looking at the grid you will notice that there are some tasks that will take longer than others. It is expected that you complete one task a week. If you require more time you will have to negotiate it with myself.

Please feel free to ask questions.

Students are required to select one box from the grid each week, students may hand this in in digital form, either emailing it to me through super clubs + or they may bring it in on their USB.
